Frequently asked questions

Financial planning should feel calm, clear, and centred on your life. Here is everything you need to know about how we work — and what to expect.

Our process

What happens in the first meeting?

The first meeting is about understanding, not advising. We explore your financial story, your current position, and what matters most to you. You will leave with early insights — but no pressure to act, commit, or pay anything.

What is the Discovery stage?

This is where we listen deeply. Before analysing any numbers, we explore your relationship with money, your experiences, and your values — ensuring that any planning reflects your life, not just your finances. It is the foundation everything else is built upon.

What happens after the initial stages?

You receive a comprehensive General Report — your financial life plan, clearly set out. It brings together your current position, your goals, and your options, giving you a clear path forward whether you choose to act independently or with our ongoing support.

What can I expect during the first full planning meeting?

We explore your money story together, gather a full picture of your finances, and introduce you to the Bucket framework. You will receive early insights about areas such as savings, investment growth potential, or inheritance tax exposure — all explained in plain language.

What happens once my plan is implemented?

Your ongoing service includes annual reviews, updated cash-flow modelling, investment reviews, scenario planning, tax efficiency checks, and continual alignment with your evolving life goals. Life changes — your plan should too.

Our approach

What is the "Bucket" concept?

Think of your finances as one overall "bucket" — bringing together everything you have, everything around you, and everything flowing in and out. By looking at the whole picture, you can clearly see whether your money supports the life you want — now and in the future — without fear of running out or having more than you need.

How is your approach different from traditional financial advice?

Most financial advice starts with numbers. We begin somewhere else — with you. We combine Financial Advice, Financial Planning, and Life Planning into a holistic process. Your values, your family, your responsibilities, and the life you want to live all come first. Only then do we shape the financial structure around you.

Will I be told what to do with my money?

No. Our role is to guide and educate. Decisions are always yours — made with clarity, not pressure. We create the space for you to think, reflect, and choose with confidence.

What is Human Capital and why does it matter?

Your Human Capital — your future earning potential — is often your greatest asset, yet it is rarely discussed in traditional advice. Understanding it helps you make better long-term choices about savings, investment, risk, and career transitions.

What if I am unsure about making financial decisions?

That is completely natural. We create space for reflection so decisions are made thoughtfully — never rushed. There is no expectation, no pressure, and no timeline imposed on you.

Costs & fees

How much does it cost?

Fees are discussed openly at the outset. There are no hidden charges and no obligation — just complete clarity before any work begins. We focus on long-term value and partnership, not product sales.

Do I need to be wealthy to work with you?

Not at all. Financial planning is about making the most of what you have — whatever the amount. We focus on your goals, responsibilities, values, and life circumstances — not a minimum asset level.

Do I need to commit to ongoing advice?

No. You are free to choose your level of engagement — whether that is ongoing support, occasional guidance, or complete independence. You receive your General Report and you decide what comes next.

Will you manage my investments directly?

We do not sell products for commission. We guide, advise, and coordinate your investments to ensure they align with your values and long-term goals. Where appropriate, we work with trusted partners to implement strategies effectively.

Practicalities

Can we work together if I am not local?

Yes. While we are based in Hampshire, we work with clients across the UK, including many in London and the South. Meetings can take place in person or entirely remotely — whatever works best for you.

Are you fully independent?

Yes. HV Financial Planning is independent and Chartered, which means we are not tied to any product providers. We search the whole market on your behalf and follow the highest standards of professionalism.

How do you ensure everything is compliant and secure?

We strictly follow UK regulations including GDPR and anti-money laundering rules. Your privacy and the integrity of your financial data are always prioritised. We are Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (Ref No. 434722).

What if my situation is unusual or complex?

Complexity is our strength. We work closely with a network of professionals — legal, tax, and investment specialists — to create a coordinated plan that addresses your unique needs with the precision they deserve.

Planning areas

Do you help with estate planning, wills, and later-life planning?

Yes. Our planning covers wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts, inheritance tax planning, long-term care, legacy planning, and intergenerational wealth transfer. We help you think about the full arc of your financial life.

How do you approach investment risk?

We believe in clarity over complexity. Your financial strategy balances growth with protection, ensuring you understand the risks involved and feel confident in every decision. There are no surprises — only informed choices.

How often will we review my financial plan?

Life changes, and so should your plan. We meet regularly — typically annually, or more frequently if required — to adjust, refine, and ensure your finances continue to serve your evolving goals.

Who do you typically work with?

We work with individuals, couples, and families who want clarity, long-term confidence, and a financial plan built around their real life. Our approach suits those who value thoughtful, personalised guidance over quick fixes or standard products.
